Gods and myths

The ancient Greeks and Romans told stories about twelve great gods. Learn their Greek and Roman names, what people told about them, and their traces in our words.

Why

The calendar says March, in science class you see the planets Mars, Venus and Jupiter, and in Brussels you visit a museum. What do these words have in common?

They all come from the stories of the ancient Greeks and Romans. March is the month of Mārs, the planets carry the names of Roman gods, and a museum was first a place of the Muses, the goddesses of the arts and sciences in the Greek stories.

These stories, the myths, are everywhere: in Latin and Greek texts, in paintings and statues in museums, in films and games. If you know them, you understand much more of what you see and read.
