The Greek alphabet

Twenty-four letters, many of which you already know from maths and physics. Learn their names, their sounds and how to write them in our letters.

1st stage12 to 14 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a classics teacher.

Why

On a trip to Greece you stand at a signpost that says ΑΘΗΝΑ. Where does that road take you?

If you know the Greek alphabet, you read the sign at once: Α is a, Θ is th, Η is ē, Ν is n. It says ATHĒNA: Athens.

You already know more letters than you think. In maths you write π (pi), in physics α, β and Δ, and the unit ohm has the symbol Ω (omega). Even the word alphabet comes from the first two Greek letters: alpha and beta.
