Greek words in our language

Democracy, physics, theatre: thousands of words come from Greek. Transliterate a Greek word and you recognise it. Know its parts and you understand its meaning.

Why

Your timetable is full of subjects like geography, physics and mathematics, and your school has a library. Did you know you speak Greek every day?

Physics comes from φυσική (physikē), the study of nature. Geography comes from γεωγραφία (geōgraphia), the description of the earth. The Dutch and French words for library, bibliotheek and bibliothèque, come from βιβλιοθήκη (bibliothēkē), a place where books are kept.

If you can read Greek words, you can guess the meaning of new ones. When you read in the paper about an aristocracy or a monarchy, a little Greek already tells you what it is about.
