Roots: Latin and Greek in your words
Aquarium, telephone, biology: a short Latin or Greek root carries a meaning. Know the root and you understand words in four languages at once.
Why
In history class you hear the word chronological, in French class the word chronomètre, and in a series someone says chronic. Do you have to learn them all separately?
No. All three hide the same Greek root: χρόνος (chronos), time. Chronological means in the order of time, a chronometer measures time, and something chronic lasts a long time.
A few dozen roots open thousands of words, in English, Dutch, French and German. That helps with every language you learn, and in subjects full of hard words like biology and geography.
